Ceiling and visibility unlimited. The weather report every pilot is hoping for: nothing overhead, nothing in the way, clear as far as there is sky.

As most of you know, I’ve been working on my pilot’s license. Nobody warns you how loud it is. Not the engine, everything else. The controller talks like an auctioneer and you have to read it all back without sounding scared. You’re copying weather with one hand and doing weight-and-balance math on your knee with the other. The radio says there’s traffic at two o’clock. I have never once seen the traffic at two o’clock. There are like a hundred different things to keep track of, and you find out the license exists because all hundred are mandatory.
It’s chaos. It costs two hundred dollars an hour, and I’m the one paying to get graded on it. But it’s my chaos.

Then the run-up checks out and the tower says cleared for takeoff. Three best words in the English language. I don’t make the rules. The engine roars up to full throttle, the wheels leave the tarmac, and you climb out on your heading, up past the ragged edges of a scattered layer. Level off. Trim the nose.

There’s a peace that shows up right there, and I haven’t found it anywhere else. It’s not quiet. The engine never shuts up. It’s better than quiet: the procedures fall away, a hundred things become one thing, and the one thing is simple. Fly the plane.
Pilots get taught a priority list for when things go wrong: aviate, navigate, communicate. In that order. Notice what didn’t make the list: apologize, optimize, reply-all. Took me way too long to realize it’s also the list for when things go right.

I started flight training after I graduated college, but honestly the real start date is somewhere in elementary school. There’s this memory of my dad and me on a jumbo jet. A 747 or an A380, I’ve stopped litigating it. The engines come up to full throttle, something shoves you back into your seat, and I remember grinning like an idiot. I was just as hyped for the landing as the takeoff, which was the tell. I didn’t want to go anywhere. I wanted to fly.

I turn 28 this month. Here’s the thing flying taught me this year: turbulence isn’t a wall. It’s not even punishment. It’s just air in motion, the sky doing what the sky always does, and for once you’re feeling it from the inside. You don’t fight it. You slow down a little, you ride it, you adjust your attitude, and you trust the wings and the frame to do the job they were built for.
I used to brace against every bump, in airplanes and everywhere else. Stiff arms, death grip, trying to hold the plane perfectly still in air that had other plans. It doesn’t work. The harder you squeeze, the worse the ride gets. The plane already wants to fly. The trick is letting it.

Down on the ground, silence mostly feels like being alone. A too-quiet apartment. A Sunday with no plans. The phone face down, and staying that way. I’ve had a lot of that silence this year, between the new city, the new job, and a lot of hours logged solo.
Up there, the silence is different. It’s busy, in the best way. Focus, a heading you’re holding by hand, thin air outside and steady hands on the yoke. Nothing about it feels empty. The airplane is flying, I am flying it, and that one sentence is the entire contents of my brain. I climb for that.

So that’s the plan for 28. Treat it like an altitude, not a deadline. Climb checklist complete. Level off, trim, let the noise fall away, hold the heading. And when it gets bumpy, because it will, don’t brace. Ride it. The blue is up there whether I can see it or not.
